Obituary for Cecil Lawrence Monkman

Cecil Lawrence Monkman
“Larry Lawrence Cecil Nan-Doe Monkman” Kikwahakew
July 27, 1952 - April 27, 2017
It is with great sorrow that the family announces the sudden passing of Larry Monkman, aged 64, after a lengthy battle with diabetes and most recently cancer.
Larry was born and raised in Winnipeg and spent most of his life here. Considered one of the “old guards” and once upon a time rounder of the North End, Larry dedicated much of his life to helping others within the inner city and had a special place in the hearts of many of Winnipeg’s diamonds in the rough.
Larry’s early years saw many of the tribulations that came from growing up in a neighbourhood whereby you had to fight frequently to get what you needed. Having received the nickname NanDoe as a young boy due to his running like a bull, Larry quickly adopted the nickname and was known by many, especially his family and close friends by this legendary moniker.
Larry found sobriety which led to him finding the Red Road, his walk upon the Red Road led to many years of health and growth. Having helped so many people through some of their darkest times, Larry continued to fight but for what others needed.
Larry leaves to mourn his passing his partner Michaela de Vasconcelos and sons Ezekiel Michael Monkman, Gabriel Isaiah Monkman, step children Kendra, Liam and Kate Stephenson, sons Darryl Monkman, Jason Monkman (Jacquelyn), Cory Campbell Monkman (Karen) and JC Campbell Monkman (Shawna), sisters Bernice and Daun, 13 Grandchildren, 8 Great-Grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Larry was predeceased by his parents, Orton and Olga Monkman, brothers, Orton and Charlie, sisters Doreen (Dodie), Isobel and his step-son Kyle de Vasconcelos Teixeira.
As per Larry’s wishes cremation has taken place and a celebration of his life will take place at the Circle of Life Thunderbird House, 715 Main St, Winnipeg MB on Saturday, May 6, 2017 from 1 to 4 PM with a feast to follow at Thunderbird House.
In lieu of flowers, a dish of prepared food for the feast would be greatly appreciated.
